PRESS RELEASE

Sheriff’s Volunteer Posse Celebrates 35 years

A ceremony was held on May 31, 2008 at the Wyoming County Volunteer Posse training grounds to commemorate the Mounted Division’s thirty five years of service.

Retired Sheriff Allen L. Capwell, who first established the Posse in April of 1973, was on hand to receive a commemorative plaque.  The plaque includes names of the fourteen original charter members.  Of those charter members, only two remain today.  Raymond Barber currently resides out of New York State.  Charter member Herbert Perdock was on hand with Sheriff Capwell to receive the plaque.

Sheriff Capwell originally established the Posse to “have a group of cowboys to help look for missing people.”  That original goal has evolved into a well trained group of volunteers who are not only available for search and rescue, but routinely aid with crowd control at large events throughout the year including the County’s annual Fair held in Pike every August.
